John Mellencamp Los Angeles Concert reviews
A Bit Overrated
In my opinion, John Mellencamp is very talented, there is no doubting that. The show seemed to have a time problem. Stage transition should have been quick and easy. The concert was billed for a 7pm start. The opening act, Us The Duo, only had a keyboard, guitar, and mics. They played for about 25 to 30 minutes. John Mellencamp did not take the stage until 8:40pm. The opening act did not come out until just after 7:30pm. This, of course, is completely disrespectful of your audience and it gave me a sour taste before the show even started (this was my first time seeing PTX). I will concede that perhaps I let others "overhype" this group to me and so my expectations were perhaps too high. The overzealous fan reactions to everything the group did also made it less enjoyable - I felt like I was an old man at a Justin Bieber concert. The show started off a little slow - I was less than impressed with pretty much all of the original music. Covers included a Michael Jackson medley, and the highlight of the show, which was an a Capella cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. We ended up leaving before the encore because although they only performed for about an hour and 10 minutes - it was already 10pm and we had been at the venue for nearly 4 hours. But at the end of the day, I just didn't find anything overly special about them. Give me a full band with instruments over this any day. The things that they are able to do as an a Capella group were, at times, pretty remarkable.
